The Installer for the “E.T.O. #4” CD release is located in the folder “E.T.O. Installer”. Drag this folder onto the hard disk where you wish to install MPW, SADE, MacApp, C++, etc. and open the folder. Double-click on the Installer icon. You will be presented with a Commando dialogue allowing several different means of installation.
••• NOTE TO PREVIOUS INSTALLER USERS:
There have been significant changes made to the Installer since the “E.T.O. #3” release. Most visible is the elimination of the “Easy” and “Custom” installation modes. Based on a number of suggestions from users, this version incorporates the capability to update existing versions, similar to the “Custom” installation option in previous Installers. If you wish to continue using the Installer as you have in the past, click the “Install” button. This will provide the same functionality as the “Easy” Install feature of previous versions.
There are three radio buttons at the top of the Installer dialogue; “Install”, “Update” and “Revert”. “Update” is the default, and allows the you to update your existing versions to the selected newer version by clicking on the check-box to the left of the name. You will have to select the folder containing the products to be updated. “Install” will not update an existing MPW; it will only install a completely new version. “Revert” allows you to return to a previous version, which is useful if you discover problems using the QR or PQR versions and wish to restore to a final release. There are a number of products on the “E.T.O. #4” CD release:
• MPW versions 3.1, 3.2, QR4 and PQR4
• SADE versions 1.1, 1.3b1, corresponding to the MPW versions
• MacApp versions 2.0.2 and 3.0a2
• MPW C++ versions 3.1 and C++ PQR4
• MacsBug versions 6.1 and 6.2.1
• ResEdit versions 1.2, 2.1 and 2.1.1b1
• two choices for the MPW 411 help system
• Omega SANE® Inits version 1.0b5, for both FPU and Non-FPU systems
• Discipline versions 2.0 and 2.0.1, both Strict and Lenient modes

Note: Special characters in your disk and folder names may cause errors in the Installer. For example, you should avoid characters such as quotes (" or ') in your hard disk name.
••• Warning: This Installer was created specially for the E.T.O. CD release as an informal project. It has not received the exhaustive testing that conventional software products get. The “Easy” Installation feature is relatively robust and automatic, but the “Custom” Installation requires the user to correctly indicate which folders each product must be installed into. Failure to tell the Installer the correct destination folder(s) may cause the installer to place items in such a way that the installed software will not function properly. For the best results, install using the processes outlined in the Manual and Release Notes for each product on the “E.T.O. #4” CD release.
INSTALLATION NOTES:
MPW / SADE Installation:
Any of the four versions of MPW may be installed. For best results with C++ and MPW 411, the Quarterly Release 4 (QR4) version is recommended. If you are developing for System 7.0, you should install SADE 1.3b1. You will note that when an MPW version is selected, only the SADE versions designed for that MPW are selectable (If you pick a SADE version, only the MPW versions which work with that SADE are selectable). This ensures that the correct versions of SADE and MPW are always installed. MPW will be installed on the hard drive in a folder called “MPW Folder”. SADE will be installed in a folder called “SADE Folder” and the Installer will update the MultiFinder and DA Handler files in the System Folder (System 6.0.X only) for use with SADE (The older versions will be renamed “MultiFinder.OLD” and “DA Handler.OLD” respectively). Note: you must restart your machine after installing SADE in order for the newer MultiFinder to be loaded.
MacApp Installation:
To install MacApp 2.0.2 or MPW 3.0a2, click the check-box. For MacApp 2.0.2, either MPW 3.2 or MPW QR4 is recommended for best results. MacApp 3.0a2 requires installation of both MPW PQR4 and MPW C++ PQR4. MacApp will be installed in a folder called “MacApp Folder” on the hard disk. The file “UserStartup•MacApp” needs to be moved from the MacApp folder to the “MPW Folder”. This is done automatically by the Installer, and any existing file will be renamed “OLD UserStartup•MacApp”. The first time you launch MPW, it will ask where the MacApp files are located. Point to the “MacApp Folder” folder and this path will be stored for future reference.
C++ Installation:
Either version of C++ may be installed by clicking in the appropriate check-box. MPW QR4 is recommended for best results with C++ 3.1. For C++ PQR4 (and MacApp 3.0a2) , MPW PQR4 must be used. C++ will be integrated into the MPW environment, replacing some of the files inside the “MPW Folder” and adding additional tools, libraries and interfaces.
MacsBug Installation:
Either of the two versions of MacsBug may be installed. If selected, the MacsBug files will be installed in a folder called “MacsBug Folder”. If you are developing for System 7.0, Macsbug version 6.2.1 is reccomended. The Installer will also update the version of MacsBug in the System Folder, renaming the older version (if it exists) to “MacsBug.OLD”. Note: you must restart your machine after installing MacsBug in order for the newer MacsBug to be loaded.
ResEdit Installation:
Any of the three versions of ResEdit may be installed. If selected, the ResEdit environment will be installed in a folder called “ResEdit Folder”. Both versions of ResEdit will work with any version of MPW. If you are developing for System 7.0, Resedit version 2.1 or 2.1.1b1 is reccomended.
MPW 411 Installation:
MPW 411 is a new Help utility for MPW 3.2. The MPW 411 Help system may be installed in one of two ways. The “Tools Only” installation copies the “Get” tool and “UserStartup•Help” files into the MPW folder. The “Complete” Installation will also copy all of the 411 data files into a folder called “Help Folder” within the MPW Folder. The “Complete” installation requires approximately 14 megabytes of disk space for the data files. If you are using the “E.T.O. #4” CD on a file server, you may use the “Tools Only” installation and, the first time you launch MPW, it will ask where the 411 files are located. Point to the “E.T.O. #4:Essentials:MPW 411” folder and this path will be stored for future reference. If you choose the “Tools Only” option, you will not be able to access the MacApp 411 information unless you specifically instruct 411 to switch to the MacApp 411 folder on the “E.T.O. #4” CD Volume.
Omega SANE® Installation:
The Omega SANE® Inits are designed to improve the floating point performance of your Macintosh. For more information about these inits, consult the “README” files in the “OmegaSANE” folder. The Installer will automatically determine your machine’s CPU and FPU type and install the correct version of the init in the “System Folder”. Please note that the Omega SANE® Inits should not be used with the Macintosh LC, and should only be used on the Macintosh SI if an FPU is installed. Note: you must restart your machine after installing Omega SANE® in order for the init to be loaded.
The default on the “Custom” installation is to update an existing version. If you wish to replace all of the files in the destination (“To”) folder, click on the “Install” radio button. If you wish to revert to an earlier version of the software, click on the “Revert” button.
The redirection buttons allow you to force the both standard output and error output from the Installer to a specific location or file. The “Show Progress” button will cause additional information to be displayed during the installation process.
Troubleshooting:
Problem:
You receive the error message “### Installer - 's must occur in pairs.” during installation.
Solution:
• Your hard disk has a single quote (') in its name. Simply remove it before performing the installation.
Problem:
You installed MacApp, but you can’t issue MacApp commands from the shell. The MPW shell does run, however.
Solution:
• Check if the Installer had enough space on your hard disk to completely install MacApp. MacApp requires a significant amount of disk space, and may partially install. If the “MacApp Folder” folder does not appear on the destination hard drive, the Installer ran out of disk space.
Problem:
The MPW tools appear to install correctly, but the shell reports that it cannot swap in tool segments.
Solution:
• Be sure that the MPW Shell has a large enough memory partition to function. Refer to the product documentation under system requirements for each MPW component.
